What is Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles (what holds the hair in place), causing hair loss. You can lose hair anywhere on your body, including your scalp, inside your nose, and in your ears. Some people lose their eyelashes or eyebrows.
The hair loss is patchy and can occur anywhere on the body. Most people’s hair loss is limited to a few patches, though it can be more severe in some cases. It can sometimes cause complete hair loss on the scalp or, in extreme cases, the entire body.
While alopecia areata rarely causes any symptoms, you can keep an eye out for these signs:
- A round or oval bald patch on the scalp.
- One or more bald patches in their beard area (men).
- A band or strip of bald skin on the scalp, which is called ophiasis
- Widespread hair loss, leaving a person with little hair on the head
- Partial or complete loss of eyelashes, eyebrows, or both.
- 10% to 20% of people who have alopecia areata see changes to their nails, which can include:
- Red nails
- Pits in the nails
- Ridges that run the length of the nails
- Nails turn rough
- Nails turning brittle and splitting
